i think everyone has a celebrity crush in highschool. mine was on john cusack. i watched every movie he was ever in, and there are many obscure ones. but my favorite was “say anything”.

he was irresistible as the quirky, nerdy guy who never gave up pursuing the girl. i’m sure you know the story, he eventually won her over, the epic moment being the night he played “in your eyes” by peter gabriel on his boom box.

the movie eventually played out in my own life several years later. i, of course, being the brilliant hottie who wouldn’t give the quirky nerd the time of day. but, he too, won me over in one epic moment.

this was it: leaving central bible church with a feeling of lonliness one day i got to my car, only to discover my quirky nerd had left flowers for me. on the hood of my car. held down by a rock. and actually, they were sort of weed-flowers, but they could’ve been 2 dozen roses for all i cared.

it was a completely quirky-nerdy thing to do for a girl, but it was perfect. it was his understated way of expressing his love for me, which he had been doing in various ways the previous two years. but that day it finally hit home. it was my epic moment.

and i have to include this, my favorite quote from the movie:

John Cusack: I got a question. If you guys know so much about women, how come you’re here at like, the Gas ‘n’ Sip on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?
Loser Dude: By choice, man.

I used to like Johnny Depp back in the ’80’s. I think it’s hilarious that girls still love him 20 years later, because he’s been in all of the Pirate movies. This guy is OLD now! He was too old for me 20 years ago when I was in high school!

What a romantic you snagged.. Kevin was just telling me tonight about how he and Steve went together to see Titanic. I am sure that was way before you guys started dating though. :)

So I think mine was Ralph Machio (sp?) “The Karate Kid” Yeah, baby!

I don’t know if you’ll still be my friend when I tell you this, but I’ve never seen “Say Anything.” I started to watch it with some girls that Eric went to college with, but didn’t finish it. Those old school movies just aren’t as great (generally) when you watch them for the first time almost 20 years after they were made. Don’t hate me, please!

Oh, and when I thought of you and your nerd it reminded me of The Trampoline of Love and Marriage. GTs! (Good Times!)

oh my Monica…those movies are STILL GOOD!!!! :)

I think I was into Corey Haim back in the 80’s he was a total nerd in “Lucas” but then he wowed me in “License to Drive!” haha I could live the rest of my life only watching 80’s movies….gotta love the brat pack!! :)

Hey, remember the cardboard cut out of John Cusack we had in my school locker? The one with him holding the radio over his head! Come to think of it, why did you always keep your books in my locker? It was fun, though.
