the office, season 4 September 30, 2007

Filed under: places i go... — simplesweet @ 4:56 am

i promised myself i wouldn’t blog about the office, AGAIN, but i can’t help myself. the season premiere was 42 minutes of pure hilarity. the opening scene alone is enough to keep me laughing for the next year.

my only bone to pick is with nbc. they took all their shows off i-tunes (in a hopeless effort to control their content?) not that i care too much because i, like 85% of tv viewers can download the shows for FREE. apparently no one at nbc knows about this phenomenon because they have no employees under the age of 45.

so, nbc needs to get a clue and the office, well, how can perfection be improved?

siberian woman and her huge baby September 28, 2007

Filed under: randomly randoms — simplesweet @ 3:37 pm

i thought i had it bad. i had 2 kids, both under 7 pounds without the comforting easement of an epidural.

but then i saw this article about a woman in siberia who birthed a 17, yes, 17 pound baby.

“I ate everything, we don’t have the money for special foods so I just ate potatoes, noodles and tomatoes,” she told the reporter, adding that all her previous babies had weighed more than 11 pounds.

obviously she had a c-section, but still, how could you POSSIBLY carry a baby that size unless you were andre the giant-ess?

awhile ago my daughter told me she wanted to be a store worker. she wasn’t sure which store, but apparently she has decided.

la vie en rose September 24, 2007

Filed under: randomly randoms — simplesweet @ 12:50 am

last night steve and i saw “la vie en rose”,  a french movie about edith piaf, “the voice of paris”.

the movie was incredible and even if you know nothing about edith piaf you need to see it. she is most famous for her song, “la vie en rose” which you  may not recognize by name, but you surely would by the music.

the actress portraying edith piaf was phenomenal…absolutely the best acting i have ever seen. but what struck me most about the movie was the woman, edith piaf and the life she lived.

she was born during the first world war to parents who abandoned her, raised partly in a brothel, partly on the streets of paris, was blind from ages 8-14, was discovered while singing on the streets, and yet, she overcame all these odds and more to become a legend and national figure.

sadly, the story doesn’t end happy.

because it is a french film, many mainstream theaters may not show it, but find it and see it. and if nothing else, rent it when it comes out on dvd.

i am so confused. did ricky gervais or steve carell? even the emmy website seems to contradict itself. they are both hilarious, but i have to go with steve carell, being that i am a die-hard “office” fan.

epiphany at the mall September 14, 2007

Filed under: places i go... — simplesweet @ 3:59 pm

2 days ago i had a significant moment. i was shopping at the mall, trying to squeeze my fat arse into junior sizes when it hit me: no matter how much i weigh, my body will not and should not fit into juniors anymore.

reality check: i am 32 years old. i have borne 2 children. i have gray hairs. my hips have acquired a “womanly” shape. it’s time to accept the inevitable: i am getting old. a couple of months ago i bought a night cream. with anti-wrinkle stuff in it.

so, it hit me right there in the dressing room at nordstrom rack. it’s time to kiss juniors good-bye and say hello to jc penney’s.

estrogen over-dose September 12, 2007

womenworshipping2.jpg

today i went to MOPS (mothers of preschoolers). i have been quite nervous about going because large groups of women always freaks me out, especially when they start singing.  i think it’s the estrogen, more specifically,  the over-abundance of it.

i don’t mind my all-women’s pilates class. there is something much more calming about a group of women sweating and grunting than a group of women singing and praying. maybe it’s residual baggage from the “dean’s chapel” we had in Bible college. dean’s chapel was a special form of torture for people like me. it was one hour of pure estrogen overload. often the topics revolved around “how to dress and not be a stumbling block”, which means you have to wear ankle-length potato sacks with turtle necks underneath. or another topic might be, “preparing to be a godly wife”, which often, i mean ALWAYS,  included a dissection of Proverbs 31 (now you know why that is one of my least favorite chapters in the Bible).

anyway, today’s MOPS group wasn’t too bad. i had a few moments of nausea, but that passed and i rather enjoyed myself. i mean, 2 hours of kid-free time to eat and make crafts? what could be better? hmmm….how about 2 hours of kid-free time to eat and NOT make crafts. yes, much better.

tonight we took a beautiful walk along the spokane river, took a little exploratory drive on the way home, gathered some of our garden bounty at the kitchen table while listening to prairie home companion and made home made tomato sauce. yummy. a good night.
