the waffle man… September 24, 2008

Filed under: places i go..., randomly randoms — brookeschlange @ 3:27 pm

in portland is pure, delectable genius. i’m pretty sure his waffles are what waffles in heaven will taste like.

they are bigger than the standard waffle and come with a variety of toppings. nutella, ham and cheese, etc. my favorite is sweet cream and butter, so simple, so good. he serves them folded in half, so when i get mine i always open it just a little to peak inside. the pools of butter swirling with the sweet cream smell amazing and my waffle is always gone in 2 minutes flat.

the waffle man knows his stuff, so make sure you make a pit stop to see him the next time you are in portland. eat an extra one for me!

WARNING: DISTURBING IMAGE BELOW

last night while doing laundry i tweaked my back. bad. i am not sure i can skate, which sucks because we have a bout this weekend,i can hardly pick up my baby and i have the mobility of a 2×4. i feel like i aged 30 years in one disastrous movement. getting old really sucks. just ask geri, the geriatric patient man-woman. although, life for geri probably sucks for reasons other than old age.

happy dirty work May 14, 2008

i love gardening. working outside in the dirt makes me happy and i have always loved having my own little patch of earth to work with. i enjoy getting to know plants and flowers as much as i enjoy getting to know my friends.

our yard isn’t big but i am having fun planting and transplanting and potting and watering and even weeding. i love to work hard and see the rewards of my labor growing big and beautiful.

sabbath May 4, 2008

Filed under: randomly randoms — simplesweet @ 3:19 am

i have been running myself weary. too much this and too much that and not enough down time. which got me thinking about the Sabbath and why the Lord instituted a Sabbath, (at this point, i better make it clear that i am not a theologian, nor do i claim to be! i haven’t studied this topic since bible college, a long time ago).

we need rest. the land needs rest. animals need rest. i keep thinking about the verse that says, “He knows we are dust…”. that is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. it gives us permission to be human and frail and tired and weary. He knows what it is to be human, and He remembers we are nothing more than dust.

so it’s ok to take a break. actually, it’s a must, even on a weekly basis. so tomorrow i am taking a sabbath. i already made our sunday meal, i am staying home from derby practice, i am not getting on the computer or talking on the phone. i am hiding from the world because it will go on without me, and observing the sabbath is a good reminder of that.  this little piece of dust needs a break.

a few random words May 1, 2008

it’s 11 pm and i am sweaty and dirty since i just got home from derby practice but i have been thinking about how boring my blog has become because all i do is post pics of my kids, which i think are adorable, but really…you don’t want to look at my kids all the time and that doesn’t offend me in the least. anyway, i am pretty happy right now because i was asked to practice with the all-star roller derby team, which doesn’t mean i am that good yet, but i guess they see potential in me. woohoo!

AND, i have just discovered a crazy fun thing i want to do when i am in california in june: take a one-day flying trapeze class! it’s pretty cheap, not too far from where i’ll be staying and sounds like so much crazy fun, what could possible be bad about this plan??? (that is a rehortorical question).

anyway, this post doesn’t beat the boring kid pics, but i am a-buzz with excitement and now i have to try and go to sleep. hopefully i’ll dream about flying through the air wearing roller skates.

thank goodness we have the media to tell us this astonishing pice of news.

oddly enough, steve asked me last night if i would rather…

1-take a year off my life but be able to eat ANYTHING i wanted for the rest of my life or

2-add a year to my life but not eat what i want in the meantime.

hmmmm….

shoe fetish April 18, 2008

Filed under: randomly randoms — simplesweet @ 11:49 pm

like many people, i have a shoe fetish. my husband has observed that most of my shoes look the same: dark colors, maryjane style. when i see women wearing those pointy-toed shoes i think, “i could look like a grown-up if i wore shoes like that”, but they look like they would squish your toes and i am all about comfort.

in my search for old skool, low-rise vans this week, i happened upon these:

yup, they fit my criteria, and they are very similar to some shoes i wore EVERYDAY in college. i broke down and got these instead of the vans, since i couldn’t find them anywhere. plus they were on sale…so, i HAD to! and just to make myself feel better, i went through all my shoes when i got home and i am got rid of several pairs (8, to be exact)!

while my mom was here this past week she helped me rescue this cute little cabinet from my basement. we hauled it up, sanded it, painted it and it’s now happily installed as my microwave stand. i LOVE the colors. thanks mom!

crayola heart colors April 12, 2008

Filed under: kids, randomly randoms — simplesweet @ 5:49 am

every morning (well, ALMOST every morning), addie and i say her bible verses together. after she says the one about God looking at the heart i always ask her what He sees in her heart.  today she said he sees white, because i (addie) am happy. but when i am sad he sees black and when i am angry he sees blue.

after being overwhelmed with the cuteness and incredibly brilliant creativity of my daughter i began wondering about what she said. what if emotions came in colors and colors were forms of communication? or what if God sees the varying degrees of our hearts through colors and colors were a way to worship him? and what if we could swallow colors we see and let it change how we feel and think?

i used to wonder what the color of a sunset would taste like but maybe it tastes like salsa or decadent chocolate cake so i already know how it tastes and i don’t even realize it?

obviously, i am getting delirious (or hungry) with all this nonsensical talk. actually, it’s late and i need to stop before i make a bigger fool of myself that i have already. but i guess at this moment i would say the color of my heart is white too.
