book club ramblings and stuff November 6, 2008

i love being apart of a book club. we have been meeting over a year, the same four of us, choosing, discussing, loving and sometimes hating our selections. We met two nights ago at my house to discuss a book titled, A Little Trouble With the Facts. The book itself was mediocre, but our conversation was lively. We covered a wide array of topics including, chinking wood homes, home schooling, and Who-ville. it was good times.

In other news, our friends the Probascos are coming today to stay with us for a couple of days. It is always a blessing to catch up with old friends. We go way back with Chris…well, 12 years back. Wow! How does that happen?

More stuff: Addy has really been enjoying the BBC Narnia Series on dvd. We have tried to explain some of the deeper meanings of the story, but mostly she likes to see the narnia creatures and children interacting, especially the Lion. He is the best part.

So, i am off to bake scones, listen to amy grant and revel in my clean house, for however long that lasts (and it won’t last long!)

it’s that time again. time for us to share our meals for the week in order to inspire, cook and conquer!

here are mine:

monday- fried spaghetti and garlic topped with myzithira cheese, spinach salad and garlic bread.

tuesday- honey chipotle barbecue chicken sandwiches on cheesey baquettes. yogurt smoothies (with spinach for added nutrition) for dessert.

wednesday- nutty pumpkin waffles, breakfast sausage, and eggs.

thursday- chicken and dumplings with mashed potatos and salad.

friday- pizza night! i use a foccaccia bread recipe for the crust and top with sauce, cheddar, mozz and parmesan cheese, salad on the side.

saturday- every man for himself!

i am almost living (one of my) dream jobs! actually, unless you count getting compensated for it, then i already am (who needs money?)

i have just embarked on editing my second manuscript. the first came from my neighbor who is a professor and writer. she gave my name to another writer and since the price is right (see comment above), i am editing one of her manuscripts as well.

i LOVE this work. i would LOVE to do it professionally. i have a lot to learn, but i am praying and hoping God will turn it into something more, ahem, financially advantageous for me (once again, see comment above).

in the meantime, i know a girl who works for free. edits, for free that is! so if you need help editing your grocery list, your christmas list, your honey-do list, or anything else, let me know!

4 yr old- (after about 2 minutes of contemplative eye-rolling) 11? is that a grown-up age?

potty training October 23, 2008

paige loves playing with her baby dolls. it is so cute when she takes them on “walks”, “feeds” them in her highchair, and puts them to “bed”. but the cuteness stopped yesterday when she began having them go “potty”. i found her sticking the baby’s bottom’s in the toilet, wiping them clean, then trying to put one of her diaper’s on them.

it wouldn’t have been that bad, except that the potty was unflushed from previous use and the drippage was all over the floor.

i’m off.

i am leaving for the weekend, ALONE. no husband, no kids, just me and my suitcase without kid clothes, diapers, baby hair clips, etc. i am so excited!

i am going to visit a good friend in seattle. we grew up together and i am very excited to spend time with her. a brand new H&M just went in near her home in university village so i KNOW i’m going there! other than that i am hoping for a relaxing weekend with a little shopping, a little movie-watching and alot of chocolate eating!

we have fruit flies and it’s grossing me out.

i have a major aversion to anything that flies around in my house. i can handle spiders and four-legged bugs, but not the winged species. and lest you think i have mounds of rotting garbage and pounds of old fruit tucked away under beds and inside cabinets, i don’t!

OR do i?

as i was deep-cleaning the four year old’s room today i found the source of our infestation. in the corner of her room, behind the closet, behind 2 boxes, in the trash can i found old banana peels. there were thousands (ok, that is a minor exaggeration) of fruit flies buzzing around, happily feasting away. i repelled in horror, but being the responsible grown-up that i am, i picked it up and took it to the back yard for my husband to deal with.  then i proceeded to try and kill off the remaining fruit flies by drowning them in room deodorizer because i didn’t have anything else strong enough to kill them with. maybe i should have tried hairspray?

goodbye sun October 1, 2008

today is most likely our last hot day. i have been sitting outside on the front porch swing drinking sun tea most of the afternoon instead of doing things i should be doing, like putting laundry away. it’s so sad to think i won’t feel sun this warm again for months. it’s like knowing you are going on a spending freeze, so you just soak it up while you can. so for right now i am going to refill my tea and go back outside.

the waffle man… September 24, 2008

in portland is pure, delectable genius. i’m pretty sure his waffles are what waffles in heaven will taste like.

they are bigger than the standard waffle and come with a variety of toppings. nutella, ham and cheese, etc. my favorite is sweet cream and butter, so simple, so good. he serves them folded in half, so when i get mine i always open it just a little to peak inside. the pools of butter swirling with the sweet cream smell amazing and my waffle is always gone in 2 minutes flat.

the waffle man knows his stuff, so make sure you make a pit stop to see him the next time you are in portland. eat an extra one for me!
